Turning 26

Aging off a parent's plan? You have options.

Turning 26 means leaving a parent's health plan — but it opens a 60-day Special Enrollment Period, and young adults often qualify for low or $0 premiums after a subsidy. We'll find yours.

Turning 26

What to do when you turn 26

Under the ACA you can stay on a parent's plan until you turn 26. When that coverage ends, it's a qualifying life event that opens a 60-day Special Enrollment Period on the marketplace — so you can enroll in your own plan without waiting for Open Enrollment.

The good news for young adults: premium tax credits are income-based, and someone early in their career often qualifies for a Silver plan at a very low or even $0 premium. If you're healthy and only need a short bridge until a new job's benefits begin, a short-term plan can also work — with the caveat that it isn't ACA-compliant.

We help you compare a subsidized marketplace plan against any employer coverage and short-term options, check that your doctors are in-network, and enroll before your parent's plan drops you.

Frequently asked

Questions, answered plainly.

When exactly do I lose my parent's coverage?

It depends on the plan — some end coverage on your 26th birthday, others at the end of that month or plan year. Check with the plan, and either way, aging off opens a 60-day Special Enrollment Period to get your own coverage.

How much is health insurance for a 26-year-old?

Often less than people expect. Because subsidies are income-based, many young adults qualify for a Silver plan at a low or $0 premium. We price your exact ZIP and income so you see the real number, not a guess.

Does it cost anything to use Health Enrollment Center?

No. We're a licensed insurance agency paid by the carriers, not by you. The premium of any plan is identical whether you enroll through us or directly with the insurer — you just also get an agent who handles renewals and claims questions.

Is this HealthCare.gov or a government marketplace?

No. Health Enrollment Center is a brand operated by Sprinter Insurance Agency LLC, a private licensed insurance agency. We are not HealthCare.gov, not a state exchange, and not affiliated with any government agency. We help you enroll in marketplace plans when they're the best fit, and we also show private plans the marketplace doesn't carry.
