How health insurance works in Washington

Washington does not use HealthCare.gov. It runs its own marketplace, Washington Healthplanfinder, and layers on two things most states don't — standardized Cascade Care plans that make coverage levels easier to compare, and state premium assistance for residents up to 250% of the poverty line. About 270,000 people are effectuated in it, and roughly 64% get a federal premium tax credit.

The 2026 market is deep: Premera Blue Cross, Regence BlueShield, Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Washington, LifeWise, Molina, Ambetter from Coordinated Care, Community Health Plan of Washington, and Wellpoint. Seattle care spreads across UW Medicine, Swedish (Providence), Virginia Mason Franciscan, MultiCare, and Kaiser; Spokane runs on Providence Sacred Heart and MultiCare Deaconess; Tacoma on MultiCare and Virginia Mason Franciscan. No plan carries every system.

We're licensed in Washington and enroll people directly through Healthplanfinder. Below is how coverage, Cascade Care, and the state subsidy work here, plus the metros and situations we help with most — the self-employed, families, and early retirees paying their own way.

Your marketplace

Washington runs its own exchange, Washington Healthplanfinder, on its own platform — not HealthCare.gov — and offers standardized Cascade Care plans plus state premium assistance up to 250% of the poverty line.

Subsidies & savings

Washington expanded Medicaid (Apple Health), so marketplace subsidies generally begin above the roughly 138% of poverty Medicaid floor.

Frequently asked

Questions, answered plainly.

Don't see yours? Call a licensed agent — most answers take under two minutes.

Is Washington Healthplanfinder the same as HealthCare.gov?

No. Washington runs its own marketplace, Washington Healthplanfinder. We're licensed in Washington and enroll you there directly, at no extra cost, and can also show you private off-exchange options it doesn't list.

What are Cascade Care plans?

Cascade Care plans are standardized designs sold on Healthplanfinder that use the same deductibles and copays across carriers, so you can compare on price and network instead of fine print. Some come with extra state premium assistance up to 250% of poverty. We'll show you where they fit.

Does Washington sell short-term health plans?

In practice no — the state caps short-term plans at three months with no renewals, and no carriers have marketed them since 2022. For a coverage gap we'll look at a Healthplanfinder plan or a special enrollment period instead.

Does it cost anything to use Health Enrollment Center?

No. We're a licensed insurance agency paid by the carriers, not by you. The premium of any plan is identical whether you enroll through us or directly with the insurer — you just also get an agent who handles renewals and claims questions.

Is this HealthCare.gov or a government marketplace?

No. Health Enrollment Center is a brand operated by Sprinter Insurance Agency LLC, a private licensed insurance agency. We are not HealthCare.gov, not a state exchange, and not affiliated with any government agency. We help you enroll in marketplace plans when they're the best fit, and we also show private plans the marketplace doesn't carry.
