How health insurance works in Maine

Maine moved off HealthCare.gov and now runs its own marketplace, CoverME.gov. About 59,000 residents enroll through it. Because Maine expanded MaineCare by ballot, coverage for adults starts at the Medicaid level and marketplace subsidies pick up above it — which side of that line you land on decides your options, and it's worth checking carefully.

The 2026 carriers are Anthem, Harvard Pilgrim, the member-owned Community Health Options, and Mending (formerly Taro Health). Care is dominated by two systems — MaineHealth, built around Maine Medical Center in Portland, and Northern Light Health across the north and east — with Central Maine Healthcare anchoring the Lewiston-Auburn area. Plans don't all carry the same system, so match the network to your doctors.

We're licensed in Maine and enroll people directly through CoverME.gov. Below is how coverage works here, plus the metros and situations we help with most — the self-employed, families, and early retirees paying their own way above the MaineCare line.

Your marketplace

Maine runs its own exchange, CoverME.gov, through the state's Office of the Health Insurance Marketplace — not HealthCare.gov.

Subsidies & savings

Maine expanded Medicaid by ballot, so MaineCare covers adults up to 138% of the poverty line and marketplace premium tax credits generally apply above that floor.

Frequently asked

Questions, answered plainly.

Don't see yours? Call a licensed agent — most answers take under two minutes.

Is CoverME.gov the same as HealthCare.gov?

No. Maine runs its own marketplace, CoverME.gov. We're licensed in Maine and enroll you there directly, at no extra cost, and can also show you private off-exchange options it doesn't list.

What's the cheapest health insurance in Maine?

For lower incomes it's often no-cost MaineCare; above that line, a subsidized CoverME.gov plan is usually cheapest after the premium tax credit. We compare your options for your exact ZIP and income.

Does Maine sell short-term health plans?

No. Rules that took effect in 2020 made short-term plans non-viable in Maine, so insurers don't offer them. For a coverage gap we'll look at a subsidized marketplace plan or a special enrollment period instead.

Does it cost anything to use Health Enrollment Center?

No. We're a licensed insurance agency paid by the carriers, not by you. The premium of any plan is identical whether you enroll through us or directly with the insurer — you just also get an agent who handles renewals and claims questions.

Is this HealthCare.gov or a government marketplace?

No. Health Enrollment Center is a brand operated by Sprinter Insurance Agency LLC, a private licensed insurance agency. We are not HealthCare.gov, not a state exchange, and not affiliated with any government agency. We help you enroll in marketplace plans when they're the best fit, and we also show private plans the marketplace doesn't carry.
