How health insurance works in Illinois

Illinois expanded Medicaid in 2014, so lower-income residents often qualify for no-cost coverage, while everyone above that line enrolls in marketplace plans where roughly 90% receive a premium tax credit. As of the 2026 plan year Illinois runs its own marketplace, Get Covered Illinois, at getcovered.illinois.gov — it replaced HealthCare.gov for Illinois residents, and existing HealthCare.gov accounts were migrated over. The metal tiers, essential health benefits and premium tax credits did not change; the enrollment front door did.

Premiums and carrier networks vary between Chicago and its suburbs, Rockford, Peoria and the rest of the state, so where you live in Illinois shapes both your price and your provider choices. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois anchors much of the market, with national and regional carriers competing alongside it.

We're licensed in Illinois and quote its major carriers every day. Below is how coverage works in the state — including where Medicaid ends and marketplace subsidies begin — plus the metros, plan types and situations we help with most.

Your marketplace

Illinois runs its own state-based marketplace, Get Covered Illinois, which replaced HealthCare.gov for Illinois residents starting with the 2026 plan year. The plans and premium tax credits are the same — only the enrollment site changed.

Subsidies & savings

Illinois expanded Medicaid in 2014, so lower-income adults may qualify for no-cost coverage. Above that threshold, marketplace premium tax credits take over — we'll help you find where you land.

Frequently asked

Questions, answered plainly.

Don't see yours? Call a licensed agent — most answers take under two minutes.

Does Illinois have its own marketplace?

Yes. Get Covered Illinois is Illinois's own state-based marketplace, and as of the 2026 plan year it has replaced HealthCare.gov for Illinois residents — enrollment runs at getcovered.illinois.gov. If you had a HealthCare.gov account, it was migrated. The plans and premium tax credits are the same, a licensed agent can enroll you at no extra cost, and we can also show private off-exchange plans.

What's the cheapest health insurance in Illinois?

For lower-income Illinoisans it's often no-cost Medicaid. Above that, a subsidized ACA marketplace plan is usually cheapest — many qualify for a Silver plan at little or no monthly cost after the premium tax credit, while others pay full price, and cost-sharing reductions can lower your deductible too. We compare your options for your exact ZIP and income.

Does it cost anything to use Health Enrollment Center?

No. We're a licensed insurance agency paid by the carriers, not by you. The premium of any plan is identical whether you enroll through us or directly with the insurer — you just also get an agent who handles renewals and claims questions.

Is this HealthCare.gov or a government marketplace?

No. Health Enrollment Center is a brand operated by Sprinter Insurance Agency LLC, a private licensed insurance agency. We are not HealthCare.gov, not a state exchange, and not affiliated with any government agency. We help you enroll in marketplace plans when they're the best fit, and we also show private plans the marketplace doesn't carry.
